History
The year was 1929. A new business opened on the south side of Main Street near Broadway selling used tires and gasoline. Fred M. Koehler opened his doors for business that year and the name Koehler has remained a part of Madison's commercial community ever since.
After a few years in business, Fred moved his operation to the northeast corner of Main and Broadway. Fred's brother, Bernard, assumed control of the business after Fred's death in 1950. Fred W. Koehler took over from his father (Bernard) in the mid-70's and in 1990 David Ungru purchased the enterprise, retaining the Koehler name.
The whole operation moved back across Main Street in the 1950's and remained at that location until October 1997, when the move to more spacious facilities on the hilltop was completed.
This latest move has resulted in a large increase in new business, probably caused by the growth in population and businesses on the hilltop over the past several decades. Koehler Tire and Supply is truly a full-service tire store. The store carries thirteen different brands of tires and has over 4,000 tires in stock. They have tires that fit lawn mowers, motorcycles, automobiles, light trucks, heavy trucks, and farm equipment. You can also dress up your car from the selection of sport wheels they have in stock. But that's not all!
Koehler Tire and Supply does all types of brake work, front-end alignment, and struts and shock replacement. They also have industrial welding gases and welding supplies in stock at the store next door.
David Ungru believes that, "If you have good products and give the customer the best possible service, you will succeed in the business." Treating the customer right is evidenced by our policy of free pick-up and delivery of your vehicle so you can remain at home or go to work while your car is being serviced. The move to the hilltop immediately increased the passesnger, light vehicle and sport utility vehicle tire sales. The largest facilities at the hilltop locations has made it more convenient for the customer to park and shop. Although farm-related sales have been about the same, David feels that the hilltop location is definitely more convenient for the farm operators. Another plus that was gained from the move to the hilltop is the ability to more efficiently service large tractor-trailer rigs. The space at the downtown location was rather confining, but with the large parking area at the hilltop location, it is easier for the big rigs to get in and out. David adds, "We strive to satisfy every customer. We stand behind our service. If he or she is not happy with the purchase (referring to tires) we will take it off and put something else on, like trying on a pair of shoes!"
